Tibetan Language & Culture School

Notice Board

Picture
2013 School commenced on Sunday 3rd February with great spirit and joy at the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre, 157 Union Rd, Surrey Hills VIC 3127. As previouse years there will be classes every second Sunday. The support from parents at school and home is indispensible for the success of the program.
Please note that the minimum age requirement for the class is 5 years or above. If parents want to bring children of younger age, then they must seek approval from the teacher and it is highly advised a parent attend the class with the child to reduce minimum disruption to the class.
Our sincere thanks  also goes to the City of Stonnington and Prahran New Hope Foundation for kindly offering a venue free of charge for the language school.

At a parents-committee members meeting on 9th Feb, the parents group was reinstated and Nawang Tobchen la, Choni la and Sonam Tobgyal la were elected as the key parents Coordinators and Sonam Tobgyal la to be the parents Rep. The main role of the parents goup is to ensure the school is running smoothly and to the satisfaction of all stakeholders; manage the parents rosters to support the teachers and organise snacks for children and keep the venue in good order. The parents group will also have a strong say in the school curriculum and future direction of the school.
In 2014 February the school has been relocated to the Grattan GHardens Commmunity Centre, 40 Grattan St, PRAHRAN.  As of 1st June 2014 the Sunday Tibetan Language school will start from its new
location at Ground Floor 2 Simmons St South Yarra

Language and Culture School of Tibetan Community of Victoria
Background: The Melbourne Tibetan Community Language and Culture school was started in 2001 as an integral part of the Tibetan Community of Victoria's educational program for young Tibetans in Victoria.  The school is open to all school age Tibetan children. It is fully managed by the Tibetan Community of Victoria with the support of voluntary teachers and helpers. During the initial time, 12 students and parents met every fortnight on Sunday over a year. However, the school was discontinued due to the lack of voluntary teachers. In retrospective the first group of children who all attended the school are now way past their teens have a fond memory of the their school times. Then again in 2007, the school started with a great deal of enthusiasm and spirit but only for a year and once again discontinued for the same reason of lacking voluntary teachers and coordination. In the meantime there has been a drastic increase in the numbers of Tibetan residents in Melbourne with the arrival of new Tibetans under the Australian Government’s humanitarian program. The current Tibetan population in Victoria is over 300 reflecting 6-fold increase since the 2001 launching of the School. In 2010 the school revamped at the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre, 157 Union Rd, Surrey Hills VIC 3127 and in 2014, February relocated to the Grattan Garden Community Centre at 40 Grattan St, PRAHRAN.
Staffing: Currently we have two teachers who are Tamding la and Nawang Tobchen la(Volunteer). Sonam Tobgyal, Nawang Tobchen and Choni are elected parents Coordinators.
School:  On any given day, there are roughly about 20 or more Tibetan children.
Cost: The portion of cost of running the school is covered by funding from the VMC and and the currently the venue is  being kindly offered free of charge by the Prahran New Hope Foundation and the City of Stonnington.
Class time: The class start at 10.30 am and has a 15minutes break at 11.15am. The class ends at 12.30pm. After the snack time parents then clean up the premises whilst children enjoy playing in the outside play ground.
- The teaching materials are sourced by the teachers themselves based on the level of understanding of the children.
Community:  Children attend regularly and are very keen to come to the school as it gives them an opportunity to meet other Tibetan children with similar cultural background.
  • Children love the social aspect of coming to Tibetan class and bond with their friends on a regular basis.
  • Siblings come along and join other toddlers and have informal play dates.
  • Tibetan class also has a strong network of parents who take special pride and interest in everyday running of the school.
  • Parents take turns to bring snacks for the children as a special treat.
  • Parents also enjoy the time to mingle and catch up with other parents while the kids attend the class.
  • Aim of the school is to facilitate the Tibetan children to learn Tibetan language, culture and heritage and to build a friendship among themselves.
